However, removal may be recommended when the existing insulation is damaged, contaminated, wet, or no longer suitable to remain in place.
When old insulation may stay
Existing attic insulation may stay if it is:
• Dry
• Clean
• Not contaminated
• Not affected by pests
• Not mouldy
• Not heavily disturbed
• Not blocking ventilation
• In suitable condition for an insulation upgrade
In this case, blown-in insulation may be added on top to improve coverage, increase insulation depth, and support better attic performance.
When removal may be recommended
Old attic insulation may need to be removed if it is:
• Wet or moisture-damaged
• Contaminated by pests
• Affected by mould or strong odours
• Mixed with debris
• Heavily compressed or uneven
• Blocking soffit ventilation
• Damaged from previous work
• Unsafe or unsuitable to cover
Why inspection is important
Adding new insulation over damaged or contaminated material can hide problems instead of solving them. A proper attic review helps determine whether the existing insulation can remain or should be removed first.
What should customers send?
To help us review your attic, please send:
• Photos of the attic hatch
• Photos of the existing insulation
• Photos of any wet, dark, damaged, or disturbed areas
• Approximate attic size
• Project address or city
• Any known roof leaks, pest issues, or moisture concerns
